Photo Opp ~ Chugging into the sugar pines of the Sierra National Forest near Yosemite is always a treat to satisfy my love for old railroads especially ones with steam locomotives. The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is a historic narrow-gauge railroad with two operating three-truck Shay steam locomotives. The railroad is located near Fish Camp, California, in the Sierra National Forest near the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park. Shay steam locomotives are among my favorite locomotives for their association with the early lumber industry which my paternal grandfather was involved with. This small tourist line travels along some of the historic route of the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company through the regions remaining massive sugar pines with their immense cones, the larges of any pine tree.
