Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Photo Opp ~ The Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway is an Abt rack cog tourist railway located in Manitou Springs, Colorado. The railroad climbs almost nine miles from its Manitou Springs depot to the summit of the well-known mountain Pikes Peak. Pikes Peak is the highest summit at 14,115-feet of any mountain in the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and is higher than any point east in the United States. The Pikes Peak Cog Railway railway is the highest in North America and was built solely for the tourist trade. Winter operations were suspended at the end of October 2017 for maintenance but in March 2018 it was announced that the railway would remain closed indefinitely. After a feasibility study, approval of local tax incentives to fund repairs, reconstruction and repairs began in Spring 2019 for a projected May 2021 reopening.
